Cruising for Emotional Connection is a 50-minute one-person performance and performance installation that explores the bathhouse as a sacred space of radical vulnerability, self-discovery, and ancestral veneration. The story follows a twenty-two-year-old named Allen who encounters an assortment of characters in his overnight visit to the Triple D Den in Dallas. Allen develops a budding relationship with a 65-year-old Black man named Tony who works as an attendant in the Den. Tony acts as Allen’s guide and ultimately teaches Allen how to cruise for anonymous, no strings attached sex. The story is told through moments of call-and-response, poetic soliloquy, stand-up comedy, and autobiographical prose.

Cruising for Emotional Connection

Performance Installation

Before the show begins, audience members are invited to explore 3 interactive “private rooms” in the Triple D Den:

  1. Ancestral Glory Hole Altar

  2. Pin the Intimacy on the Body

  3. Affirmation Mirror Wall

Within these three rooms, cruisers are invited to reflect on their relationship to ancestral veneration, intimacy in their own bodies, and self-affirmation. The goal of this pre-show installation is for audience members to metaphorically baptize themselves in the themes of the show before Pastor Allen begins the opening bathhouse sermon.

Cruisers engage the Affirmation Mirror Wall.

Cruisers are prompted to place a sticker on the places they experience intimacy in their bodies.
